Hi, I'm Betsy! Daughter and Sister in law of the amazing women who run Fresh Vintage. I am privy to a lot of behind the scenes work. And I must say, wow - what hard workers! These women spend their weekends scavenger hunting, their nights painting, and their mornings reorganizing the store. It's exhausting just to think about, they cannot be kept up with!
I probably should have started this post with an apology. I have the privilege of seeing some pieces before they hit the store... And on a few occasions I just had to make them mine! I am still working on my style, but I am drawn to unique, one of a kind, eclectic pieces. I am in the stages of swapping out a lot of old pieces. Tossing out old furniture I've had since college, impulse purchases, etc. I think we've all been there.
I am trying to be more diligent about my home decor purchases. Asking myself questions like: Will this really fit? Do I really need it? What purpose will it serve? Just because I like something doesn't mean it is going to work. I am learning to admire different styles without trying to cram them all under one roof.
Let's start with my favorite favorite piece, the open bookcase in our living room. The dings and scratches are part of the charm. It serves as our TV stand and a place for my books (double bonus because they also function as decor). PS, I am weeding out the Danielle Steel... Out with the 90's romance in with the vintage hardbacks in beautiful colors! PPS, my sweet little toddler thinks its hilarious to throw the books... And, this house is slowly but surely being taken over by baskets of toys!
We have a large kitchen with high vaulted ceilings, so this room needed something large with a punch of color. This green hutch in its original paint does just the trick. I am always trading knick knacks in/out. We will often use this as a space for desserts during parties. And, when we aren't expecting company... a really great place to pile mail :)
Honestly, it would be difficult to walk into any room in our house and not find Fresh Vintage influence. I'm lucky to be related to such wonderful, hard working women, with great eyes for style!
I will leave you with a few Insider Tips. If you don't see it in the store, just ASK! There is a good chance that your perfect piece may not have made its way to the store just yet. Do you have a piece at home that needs to be refreshed? Don't have the time to paint? Stop by the store and receive a quote to have your furniture painted. Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan is meant to be played with. Mix it up to match your vision. Finally, if you are interested in purchasing a piece - don't wait! I've seen too many heart break when they find out the piece they had in mind just sold.
There is not much I enjoy more than decorating a space in my home so it reflects my personal style...a style that I am unsure has a category. Eclectic maybe? The fact is, I love all things unique, colorful and eye catching, things that have history and a story. I love it when a guest comes into my home and says, “Look at that beautiful TV stand, where did you get that?!” I know that it is a piece that no one else has, something completely unique to my home. And many of these items have so much history and a story and are brought back to life through color and a unique way of using them.
My first large purchase from Fresh Vintage was this gorgeous buffet which has become our television stand...
I was able to pick out the color I wanted it painted and decide what parts I wanted to leave stained. It is an eye catching piece that not only has history and beauty, but function that is beyond what it was originally intended for. A fresh new look to an old, antique buffet. I am in love with this piece!
While I was shopping in Fresh Vintage one day, I was browsing around and out of the corner of my eye, I spotted this beauty being carried into the shop to be put on display to sell. No way was I letting it even be put down on that sales floor! It was MINE! I knew it instantly. The chartreuse, the pink...pretty much the chair of my dreams...
It sits happily next to the TV stand of my dreams and again I know these pieces will never show up in anyone else’s home.
I love that I have one of a kind pieces in my home that reflect me, which I can build my decorating around. There is never a time that I can’t find something big or small that I want to purchase in Fresh Vintage!
From a fun wall hanging that we turned on its side to use as a unique headboard to antique mirrors that create just the look I want on a feature wall in my dining room to vintage cameras which are the perfect touch to my home and represent my career and passion for photography...
The heart of our home, the place where our family gathers and eats meals, does homework, prays together, where we laugh and play board games...the kitchen table where so many memories are made. That is where you will find our most recent Fresh Vintage purchase...it was as though this table was meant for our home, for our kitchen. This was beautifully painted and the chairs newly upholstered when I spotted it online. It was JUST the piece I was looking for!
There is almost no room in our home that you will walk into without seeing a touch of Fresh Vintage.
Your home is your resting place, the place where you should feel most comfortable, the place that should be filled with everything you love. When you walk through Fresh Vintage and spot that perfect item, that thing that you LOVE, that piece that is the perfect, one of a kind representation of YOU, it is something you know you can’t go home without. That happens to me every time I step foot in Fresh Vintage – if only I had more rooms to fill!
Hi friends! My name is Meagan, and I am admittedly a little design-challenged. It is unfortunate, I know, and what the heck am I doing writing a blog post for a design store right? Well, let me tell you about my love affair with Fresh Vintage.
I have gotten to know the Tubandt family over the last few years and was really excited when they opened the store downtown. I was albeit a little leery to visit due to my aforementioned lackluster design skills but I wanted to support this amazing family in their new venture. And thank goodness I did!
My first purchase was this gorgeous pink mirror that lives in my now almost two-year-old daughter Kenley’s room. I went in to the store one day and just fell in love with the color, with its vintage appeal, and with the general sweetness and femininity of it. Here’s where Fresh Vintage really hits it home for me. They not only have unique products, they are incredibly skilled at helping you complete your vision (or in my case, have a vision to begin with!). I started talking with Cindy, telling her how much I loved the mirror but where in the world would I put it? Cindy, having never been to my home, asked a few questions about paint colors and wall space but then suggests my daughter’s room. Bingo. I never would have thought to put it there but it’s perfect! She absolutely helped me see what I couldn’t on my own.
My second beloved purchase from Fresh Vintage was actually a gift from my sweet husband. I have historically gone down to the store each year in December to pick out a gift for my work Christmas party gift exchange. I love being able to bring something really unique and different to the party each year that begs everyone to ask where I’ve shopped. Plus it’s so helpful to get the opinions of whoever is working on what other women may like as a gift. One year in particular, I took my husband with me to pick out my gift and I found this industrial-looking soap dish. I really liked it but wasn’t sure it was right for the gift exchange so I left with something else secretly wishing I could have taken it home with me. You can see where this is headed right? A few weeks later on Christmas, I tear into a gift from my husband and find this soap dish with a few handmade, amazing-smelling soaps. I love how it adds this sort of rough, old school industrial vibe to my otherwise modern bathroom.
Lastly, and most near and dear to my heart, is this labor of love. My dresser turned TV stand. About a year ago, my husband and I realized that we had to break up with our old TV stand. First, it was ugly. Second, the doors had broken off years ago and we never replaced them. Third (and most importantly), it was low enough to the ground that our then ten-month-old crawling baby had decided her favorite activity was pulling out and sitting on the DVDs, and pushing the buttons on all of the electronics it held. Also, I mentioned it was ugly right? Cue a trip to Fresh Vintage! I literally had no idea what I wanted when I got there, I just knew it needed to have some sort of closed storage. I started talking with Jenny and sort of stumbled through the ideas I had about what we were looking for and she just took it and ran with it.
She suggested a converted dresser and showed me an unfinished one they had just brought to the store. I got to pick the color and finish, and decide what to do with the handles/knobs. They even took the drawers and tracks out to create shelf space for our cable box and Blu-ray player but made sure I took them home in case we want to repurpose it later. I absolutely loved how it turned out! It opened up the space and felt like a step in the right direction toward making our home reflect who we are. Plus, our toddler (who has since learned to restrain herself around DVDs and buttons) likes to store her crayons and coloring books in the bottom drawers and we feel comfortable letting her have free reign. Stylish and functional!
All in all, if you haven’t visited Fresh Vintage yet, do yourself a favor and go. Not only do they have great pieces in the store to choose from but if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for, they can help you find and customize something that will perfectly fit your space. Plus they have great advice on design style and can help you picture what, if you are anything like me, you struggle to see.
Two years ago, my husband Chad and I lost our minds and sold our five year old that we built in 2007, to buy a 100 year old farm house. We have always dreamt about living in the country and having a small acreage; a place we could unwind and unplug. More importantly, a place our kids could play outside and have animals to take care of. I remember one of the first things Chad said to me was “I see a lot of projects that will require time and money. Both things we don’t have much of.” Like I was gonna let that stop me!
My dream is to one day be featured in Better Homes and Gardens…but real life soon takes over and the projects have added up and the money is always going out as quickly as it comes in. But the life experiences are priceless!
Decorating this massive home is a daunting task especially when I have such a broad range of decorating styles. I love eclectic pieces, traditional pieces, I am not afraid of color on the walls. I am also married to a hunter so we have deer heads mounted on the walls. I also want to respect the history of this home and not fill it with all new pieces. I believe that a house is meant to be lived in so I don’t want the home to feel like a showroom. So from all of this you can understand why I am at a loss most of the time! When I need a little encouragement and inspiration I pop into Fresh Vintage and see my BFF Jenny! We have been Best Friends for over 20 years and she knows me and what I like better than anyone. She is great giving me suggestions and inspiration.
When Fresh Vintage first opened in the Pearl Plaza I fell in love with this sweet little mermaid lamp. Her home is currently on a bookshelf on our staircase landing. I like to move pieces around the house. (My Grandma Joyce used to rearrange the furniture in her house at least once a month and this apple didn’t fall too far from the tree!) This lamp came from Florida, so she is like my little piece of the beach right here in the middle of Iowa!
My FAVORITE purchase by far from Fresh Vintage was theses drawer pulls. This beautiful China Hutch is original to the house. The columns on the hutch actually are carved exactly like the columns entering the dining room. The former owners had these boring glass pulls on the hutch,(you can still see them on the bottom three drawers) which are true to the time period. But it needed something to make it POP! After seeing the flower pulls on another piece I decided that these were going to be on the small drawers and then I added the small round pulls to match. I love how the pulls look on the hutch and just brings this hutch to life.
The final piece from Fresh Vintage that I LOVE is my rag rug. I have always loved these rugs – but our cat Stew Podasso loves it even more. The first day I brought the rug home and unrolled it I wasn’t sure where it was going to go. Stewie kind of claimed the rug as “HIS” and wouldn’t let me move it. At first I had this under a coffee table in my living room, but now it is in the “reading nook” living room/entry way. I really love where this rug is right now, so for the foreseeable future, it is staying put. Stew doesn’t care where it is as long as he can nap on it at least once a day.
Our list of projects keeps growing and room by room we are getting it done. And as we finish each room a few more pieces from Fresh Vintage will make their way to the 4L Farm. And some day, when I finally make it into Better Homes and Garden magazine, I hope Jenny will be sitting right next to me taking credit for the beautiful home she helped me create!
Welcome! We are starting something new on the site. We plan to feature guest posts from our customers and their love of all things vintage. We are so excited about this first post as Elizabeth is a Muscatine native and has carried her love of Fresh Vintage across the country. She has created the prefect set up for a girls night. It is also a wonderful excuse to break out the champagne... If you need an excuse! Stacking small sorbet or champagne glasses on a silver thrift store tray is a great way to add quick and simple elegance!
Hey everyone, Elizabeth here! Really excited to be featured on the page of one of my favorite local stores, Fresh Vintage! My design style is definitely eclectic. I simply choose pieces that I love- typically ones with a story, and it all seems to fit nicely in my home! Now let's be real, the "pieces with a story" is a classy way to say thrift store finds!! The other shops I frequent, are JCPenney and Fresh Vintage.
I recently moved to California! So my entire apartment is furnished in JCPenney outlet store furniture and a few of my favorite thrift store/Fresh Vintage finds. Since I love to decorate, I just moved out with the clothes on my back, literally!!! I was relocated with my company, JCPenney, from Texas to Cali, where I am the Transportation Manager for our LA distribution center. You are probably thinking how can I get great pieces from Fresh Vintage living so far away! Well my lovely mother does visit frequently, and I am kinda sassy and demand hostess gifts.
We have similar style, plus I let her know what I would like, such as pink champagne glasses. Fresh Vintage is a dream if you are not daring enough to brave the sights/sounds/smell of a thrift store or don't have time or expertise to fix up vintage furniture or troll craigslist for hours. They fix up beautiful furniture pieces, have all the cutest little knick-knacks, gifts, prints and home decor you could need!
